La Despensa Field Blend, La Despensa
Description
All grapes are from our own organic (non-certified) vineyard in Santa Ana. We live and work on the vineyard- our house is literally a few metres away! All the work is done by myself (Matt) and our part-time worker Juan. Every now and again we'll get a couple more people in to help out with specific tasks on the weekend, and for harvest we always have a crew of people from both Chile and overseas! This is small-scale, old-school, hands-on viticulture and winemaking. We're not a huge, faceless operation: We grow the grapes, we make the wine and we label the bottles by hand.
Our label is inspired by, and a homage to, those Art Nouveau advertising posters from France in the 1920s. This wine is a typical Rhône blend, and when we think of the south of France, we just automatically think of that era. It is also a representation of our life here in the vineyard, with our dogs, cats and vines- everything that is important to us.
Our Field Blend is our first and most important wine and the reason we planted our vineyard. Being British, I grew up drinking French wine, and the wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape were always my favourites. So that's why I decided to plant the varieties we have when I was planning our vineyard!
The wine is really versatile and will go well with almost all kinds of food. It has lovely acidity and tannins that will help it age gracefully over the next few year, or can be drunk right now. Go get the corkscrew!

Producer Details
La Despensa Wines from Chile’s Colchagua Valley is owned, organically farmed and operated by Matt Ridgway, originally from Dorset, and his Chilean wife Ana. La Despensa is focused on varieties that are not what you’d typically expect from Chile, such as the traditional Rhône grapes of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. They also offer a rare example from Chile of Italy’s signature grape Sangiovese and even rarer and very old-vine Pais from Colchagua, where there are just 50 or so hectares left of these ancient vines in the entire valley. La Despensa produces high-quality, fresh, unoaked and deliciously drinkable wines that invite a second glass.
