Douro Wine
The Douro valley built its reputation on Port, a fortified, red sweet wine popularised by the British as a result of wars with France. Port houses such as Taylor’s, Croft and Sandeman were all founded by Brits and in 1756 it became the first region to have its boundaries set out in law, making it the world’s oldest wine appellation. Today Port still dominates the wine scene in the Douro but it is not the only wine being made in the region, with dry red wines and refreshing white wines becoming more widely available.
