Rioja Wine
Rioja is the most important of Spain’s wine regions. Its wines are inspired by those of Bordeaux but are made using Tempranillo and Garnacha rather than Merlot and Cabernet. Winemakers in Rioja traditionally will age their wines in American oak barrels to impart their distinctive vanilla character but today more and more winemakers are using French oak as it is seen as delivering a little more finesse to the final wine. The wines are often given long ageing times in cellars to ensure the customer receives them at their best.
