Georgia: The Cradle of Wine

INTRODUCING GEORGIA

Georgia is where Europe meets Asia, bounded on the west by the Black sea, the north by Russia, the south by Turkey and Armenia and to the east by Azerbaijan. Georgians have been making wine since the 6th millenium BC and it is the only country in the world where winemaking methods that were developed up to 8,000 years ago have not only never been abandoned but remain, in many ways, best practice. South Caucasia is recognised to be the source of the world's first cultivated grapevines and the majority of linguists agree that the semantic of the word 'wine' is rooted in Kartvelian languages - the language of Georgia.

Alongside this the Qvevri, a giant conical clay vessel that is buried underground and holds the wine whilst undergoing fermentation and maturation, was the first ever vessel to used in winemaking.

Given the ancient history of winemaking in this region we are delighted to now bring 11 Georgian wines to our shelves and give you the opportunity to taste them in store for four Fridays/Saturdays across October - on the 8th, 16th, 22nd and 30th.

We also have several tasting case offers available below so take a look and we look forward to joining you on your exploration of Georgian wine. We have seven Georgian wines made in the modern method and four made in the traditional Qvevri method.
