South Downs Cellars has been championing independent, quality wine since 2003. From our two stores in Hurstpierpoint and Lindfield, we have built a reputation across West Sussex as a wine merchant that values knowledge, genuine enthusiasm, and wines that are as interesting as they are delicious, sourced from smaller, family-owned estates rather than the supermarket mainstream.

Our Wine School evenings are run by the same knowledgeable team that curates our shelves every day. We believe that wine education should be relaxed, enjoyable, and above all practical so every session is built around tasting, discussion, and discovery rather than lectures and textbooks.

Across three evenings, you'll explore wine through every sense. You'll learn to read a glass before it even reaches your lips - understanding what colour, clarity, and viscosity reveal about what's inside. You'll discover how to unlock a wine's aromas, moving from first impressions to layered complexity, and develop the palate confidence to describe what you taste in your own words.

Evening One: Taste six benchmark white wines, exploring how climate and winemaking shape each variety's character. The wines are chosen to show clear varietal typicity, and the session ends with participants building their own personal flavour map.

Evening Two: From the silky lightness of Gamay to the structured power of Cabernet Sauvignon, taste six definitive reds and discover how tannin, acidity, and oak define style.

Evening Three: Learn the principles of food and wine matching and put knowledge to work. Rather than just explaining pairing ‘rules’ in the abstract, participants will experience first-hand - including deliberate clash pairings that are often the most memorable moments of the whole course. Maybe rules are meant to be broken!
